Sunday morning, November 9, 2008, was Military Sunday at the old church downtown. Pastor Schaap and members of First Baptist Church
of Hammond honored the men and women who have served and are serving in the Armed Forces.

Veterans singing "God Bless America" during the Military Sunday service.
The program commenced with the church choir and orchestra performing a rousing rendition of the song, "I Salute You." The
veterans and active-duty military personnel were recognized with cheers and applause when each stood as their branch of service
was called. At the end of the song, video images of civilians were shown saluting those brave men and women who served. Then all
those in active duty were directed to the platform to receive a commemorative medal, the book Growing Up in Vietnam, and
a copy of the King James Bible from our pastor. They were then instructed to assemble at the foot of the platform as the veterans
gathered on the west end, to form a 260-voice choir. The congregation was moved to tears as these veterans sang out, "God
Bless America."
The church congregation responded very enthusiastically at Pastor Schaap's commendation of those who served and his condolences
of all who gave their lives in service to their country.
Special recognition was given to Mr. John Latko, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Also given special recognition was
a contingent of officers and men of the Filipino armed forces. A number of these men received Christ as Saviour and were baptized,
the oldest being 88.
At the end of the service all active duty men and women where treated to a steak diner at our servicemen's center and each veteran
was given a beautiful yard sign naming their branch and "Thanks for your service to our country." - John Olsen
