Cooperative Move Allows History Facility to Upgrade Care and Provisions for Those Needing a Helping Hand.

The Hammond Shelter–operated by the City of Hammond and volunteers from many churches in the area–has been a refuge for the homeless and heartbroken for many years. It is located at 527 State Street, right next to the Reformers Unanimous Home, which is operated by First Baptist Church. The Hammond city officials have watched carefully the work and results of Bro. George Ranft and his dedicated staff in regards to the Reformers Unanimous program, and they want the same program initiated at the shelter.

The shelter serves three hot meals a day and has sleeping facilities for 12 women and 36 men. The facilities have been under major renovation since the church was given the oversight of the program on December 31, 2008.

Elise Yarbrough has been with the shelter for some time and will remain as a key “go-to” person in the daily routine of the care of the shelter’s patrons. Rene Schultz, Dave Talbott, and Joe Karlson will work as First Baptist Church staff team leaders. Local churches and businesses will continue to help with food and other provisions as they have so graciously in the past.
